How to register for the After School Child Care Program:

On our website, www.hkrec.com, you can pay the annual processing fee of $20 and complete all forms.  Health records for any new students or 6th graders are required.

Enrollment/General Information

(As of January 4th, 2021 the Killingworth Elementary School  After School Program is temporarily closed due to low enrollment.  Please contact the Director of Child Care, Jen Mislick (jen@hkrec.com) if you are interested in enrolling your child at the KES After School Program.  We will reopen once we have enough enrollment.  There is also van transportation for a minimum number of students to attend the Burr After School Program that attend KES.)

The Program provides care for children in Kindergarten through 6th grades. The program is designed to accommodate any children who are physically handicapped, providing they normally ride school buses.

The program operates daily 3:25 – 6:00 pm (KES & BES). On scheduled 1/2 days of school, the afternoon program begins at 1:05 PM and ends at 6:00 pm. Children may be registered to attend the afternoon sessions on a full-time basis. A special vacation child care program may be offered on most school holidays and vacations (Veteran’s Day, President’s Day Break and April Vacations). The program does not meet on days when school is delayed, canceled or dismissed early due to weather or other circumstances.

The program curriculum is realistic and diversified. The types of activities offered include: arts and crafts, games, free play (indoor and outdoor), homework assistance and special rainy day activities.  The curriculum strives to meet the varying needs of the different children and their respective ages.

Registration is restricted to those children attending District #17 Elementary Schools.

*** Food and Allergy Policy*** 

The fee structure is as follows:

Full-time: Fees are calculated each month, based on the number of school days. If you register full-time, the fee (based on 20 school days) would be $320 per month each child.

Part-time:  $18.00 per regular school day / $35.00 per minimum day of school for each child.

Payment notices will be available at the After School Program, on our website (you can also pay online) and they will be emailed to you once you are registered.

There is a late pickup fee of $1.00 per minute (6:00-6:15) and .50 cents per minute thereafter, paid directly to the staff on the day of late pickup.

There is an annual processing/registration fee of $20 per child. You must complete the required forms in the Registration Packet.

2021 April Vacation Camp

The HK Recreation Department will be offering a vacation program during April break at the HK High School Cafeteria. The vacation program will provide care for children in Kindergarten through Grade 6.

We will be open all days of school vacation April 12 – 16. The program will begin at 8:30 AM and will end at 4:30 PM.

The program’s activities are both active and passive in nature. Types of activities offered include: Arts & Crafts, Sports/Games, Free Play, Swimming in the HK Pool, and a Disney movie to be shown in the auditorium on Wednesday.

Schedule of activities:

  • Swimming: Campers will have a choice to go swimming at the HK pool on Tuesday & Thursday. Lifeguards will be on duty along with camp staff.  Please note that children must be able to swim without a bubble. They will be tested.  There will be alternate activities for non-swimmers. ( A minimum of 10 swimmers are needed.) 

The Vacation fees are as follows:

Daily Full-Time (8:30 – 4:30 pm)
You may register your child for individual days. The fee is $45 per day ($47 for non-residents)

All Inclusive (M-F, 8:30 – 4:30)
If you register your child all week, the fees are $200 ($210 for non-residents)

Late Fee: There is a late pick-up fee of $5 for every 5 minutes a parent is late past 4:30 PM, paid directly to the program staff on the day of late pick-up.

What to bring: Children should bring a bag lunch daily, 2 snacks and water bottle. Anyone swimming should bring a bathing suit and towel in a plastic bag. Children should wear sneakers and dress for active play.  Please bring a pencil box with markers or crayons, child scissors and a glue stick.

HK RecCare Summer Camp

Registration opens on 5/1/21!

MondayFriday, June 21st – August 13th (No 7/5) at the HK HS Complex.  Camp will be mainly outdoors (we will have use of space inside for inclement weather).
There are 8 weekly sessions with 4 options:

  • CAMP ONLY (9:00 – 3:30 pm)
  • EXTENDED AM (7:30 – 3:30 pm)
  • EXTENDED PM (9:00 – 5:00 pm)
  • FULL-DAY CAMP (7:30 – 5:00 pm)

The program meets rain or shine. Activities include: sports, games, arts & crafts, special events, wacky Wednesdays, ice cream truck, & weekly themes.  Please send your child with a pencil case size container for arts & crafts supplies as well as a water bottle, lunch and snacks.

There are no daily sign-ups.  Non-Residents may register for an additional fee!

Camp Discovery is for kids entering Grades 1 & 2.
Camp Adventure is for kids entering Grades 3 & 4.
Camp Explorers is for kids entering Grades 5, 6, 7, 8.

Pick-up and Drop-off Location for all camps is from 7:30 – 9:15 am and 3:15 – 5:00 pm in the cafeteria lobby.



COVID-19 Safety Protocols

TRAVEL: Please note that the CDC and DPH are discouraging any non-essential travel to reduce the risk of cross contamination in and among communities. VRHS is asking individuals and families to be mindful of the travel recommendations and be considerate that everyone’s level of risk tolerance for exposure is different. In person learning is our priority and as a community we need to protect our ability to remain in the classroom.

CT Travel Recommendation

The HK Recreation Department will be following the guidelines and protocols issued by the CDC as well as the OEC in order to provide a safe summer camp experience.

  1. Staff and Kids will be screened upon entering. They will not be allowed to attend if showing any symptoms.
  2. If your child has shown any symptoms within the last 10 days or has been around anyone who has shown symptoms, please do not send them to camp. Of upi  Staff If People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:
    • Fever or chills
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Fatigue
    • Muscle or body aches
    • Headache
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Sore throat
    • Congestion or runny nose
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Diarrhea

    This list does not include all possible symptoms. CDC will continue to update this list as we learn more about COVID-19.

  3. If your child has been identified as a close contact, they will not be allowed to attend camp for the duration of their quarantine period even with a
    negative PCR or Antigen test.
  4. Drop-off and pick-up will be from 7:30 – 9:15 am and 3:15 – 5:00 pm in the cafeteria lobby.
  5. Group sizes will be no more than 20 kids and each group will be in separate areas within each camp. Kids will be put in the same group each week. We will do our best to group together kids by grades/genders. There will be no mixing of groups.
  6. Register early as space will be limited.
  7. Counselors, staff and campers will wear masks. There will be mask breaks throughout the day.
  8. All areas will be cleaned and disinfected each day.
  9. Good hygiene will be reinforced to staff and children with regular hand washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds throughout the day.
  10. There will be a designated “sick area” if any child comes down with COVID-19 symptoms while at camp and that child must be picked up ASAP.
  11. HK Recreation will keep on top of new guidelines that come out as they change often.

FEES:

Due to COVID-19 and the strict guidelines with staff ratios (2 staff to 10 kids) as well as minimum wage increase, we have had to raise fees.

Non-Residents: Please add $10.00 per week per child.  There is a $25 late fee if registering after the Wednesday preceding the week you want to attend
and $35 late fee if registering the 1st day of camp.  There will be no refunds 72 business hours before camp begins.

Option 2: Extended AM or Extended PM (7:30 am – 3:30 pm or 9:00 am – 5:00 pm)

HK RecCare Before School Sunrise Club

Come enjoy the morning with friends coloring, reading, etc. Program meets for one hour before the start of school. Program follows the school calendar and does not meet when school is delayed or cancelled due to weather or other emergencies.

Children grades K- 3 who attend BES, KES or HKIS students in grade 4 & 5. (HKIS students will take transfer bus)
7:45 – 8:40 am

2019 June Vacation Camp

The HK Recreation Department will be offering a vacation program during April break at the H-K High School Cafeteria. The vacation program will provide care for children in 1st through 8th grade.

We program will be conducted June 17th through June 21st. The program will begin at 7:00 AM and will end at 6:00 PM.

The program’s activities are both active and passive in nature. Types of activities offered include: Arts & Crafts, Sports/Games, Free Play, Swimming in the HK Pool, and a Field Trip. Each day at there will be an organized game in the gym.

Schedule of activities:

  • Swimming: Campers will have a choice to go swimming at the HK pool on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Lifeguards will be on duty along with camp staff.  Please note that children must be able to swim without a bubble. They will be tested.  There will be alternate activities for non-swimmers.
  • Field Trip: * Admission fee and busing is included with your registration. On Thursday, June 20th we will be going to Mystic Aquarium.  We will be departing at 9:30 am and returning by 3:00 pm.  Please pack a bag lunch.
  • Special Event:  On Tuesday, June 18th we will be renting a moonbounce for the day.  *Cost is included with your registration.
  • Ice Cream Truck: On Friday, June 21st, the ice cream truck is coming to camp after lunch.  Please send your child with no more than $3.

Interviews will be scheduled by the Director of Child Care, Jen Mislick, beginning in March.

If selected to be a CIT, you are required to: attend training, staff meetings; commit to volunteer for 4 weeks and pay $100.00.
